That first project led to the development of software to calculate the postures and efforts induced by the working environment on the body of a manufacturing operator as they carry out their tasks. <\/p>\n\n<p>To carry out the calculation, sensors were placed on the operator. But hand measurements were not possible, because no instrumented tools were available in the market. <\/p>\n\n<p>The ERGOHAND project is aimed at filling that gap and creating a measuring tool that is suited to the hands of the operator.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the course of the project, other sectors exhibited an interest for the solution. That need was brought to light in a market survey carried out by UMI. As presented in the charts below:  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"790\" height=\"382\" src=\"https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-image-1.png 790w, https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-image-1-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-image-1-768x371.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5ba58d87b308b709dbf218101dd53f4e\" style=\"color:#2055a2\"><br\/><br\/><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Challenge &amp; innovation<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The challenge thrown down by the project was the faithful acquisition of the force applied by the operator\u2019s hands on the environment. And also the ability to capture the vibrations and postures imposed on the operator\u2019s hands by the environment. <\/p>\n\n<p>Merging data between the measured efforts and postures enabled us to reconstruct an effort oriented in space.<\/p>\n\n<p>Such acquisition must be possible without coming in the way of the movements gestures of the operator.<\/p>\n\n<p>The measurement tool takes the form of a pair of connected gloves fitted with sensors:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"781\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-image-2.png 781w, https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-image-2-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-image-2-768x345.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 781px) 100vw, 781px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The sensors on the glove are as follows:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the inside of the hand\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>12 pressure sensors are distributed over the palm and fingers. These sensors measure the effort of interaction between the hand and the environment. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the back of the hand<ul><li>10 flexion sensors measure the two degrees of angulation of the joints between the metacarpal bones, the proximal phalanges and the intermediate phalanges. The angulation of the joints of the distal phalanges is considered to be coupled with the previous ones.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><ul><li>Five inertial measurement units (IMUs) are placed on the intermediate phalanges in order to provide a second source of information about the angulation of the articulations (that source of additional information is particularly important on the thumb because of its multidimensional movements with significant amplitudes).<\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the wrist\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One IMU is placed above the wrist (wrist angulation is calculated as the difference between the two IMUs of the hand and wrist)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Calculation and communication unit<br\/>A microprocessor collects all the information and sends it on via Bluetooth to a computer every 7 ms.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1e739c42d616b7f6f030d1021a3975e1\" style=\"color:#2055a2\"><br\/><br\/><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Results<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Several iterations of the glove were made during the project to develop a demonstrator, which was then assessed in operating conditions in manufacturers\u2019 facilities.<\/p>\n\n<p>The gloves were assessed for the following operations at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safran-group.com\/fr\">Safran<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellantis.com\/fr\">Stellantis<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Torque tightening<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Screwing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unscrewing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deburring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Masking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impact unscrewing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clipping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Door trim assembly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Vibration qualification tests were carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cetim.fr\/\">CETIM<\/a>. These tests have shown encouraging results regarding the possibility of using the glove as a standardised vibration sensor. <\/p>\n\n<p>The gloves have also been used in the European Merging project (grant agreement ID: 8869963) as a tool during robotic co-manipulation to move soft products (such as textiles).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-Image-3-1024x572.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-Image-3-1024x572.png 1024w, https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-Image-3-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-Image-3-768x429.png 768w, https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-Image-3-1536x858.png 1536w, https:\/\/factorylab.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Ergohand-Image-3-2048x1144.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The gloves have also been used internally as a robotic interaction tool.<\/p>\n\n<p>The glove makes it possible to co-manipulate an industrial robotic arm.
